Get your kitchen GREEN in 2013

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

We did it! We survived the dreaded end of the Mayan Calandar and lived to tell the tale but now what? Here we are on the cusp of a new year and a fresh start. NOW is the time to motivate yourself to make those little changes that will make a big impact for 2013.

Last week as we prepared for the end of the world, we talked about some tips on getting your home green. This week, we zone in on getting our kitchen green.

Skip the non-stick
Non-stick  pans are coated with with polytetrafluoroetheylene (PTFE), aka Teflon which can break down when heated, releasing toxic fumes and particles. These fumes are part of the perfluorinated chemical “family” (PFC’s) and are considered a danger to our health and the manufacturing process of this coating also causes environmental hazzards so they are best avoided. PFC’s are also widely used in many everyday products like microwave popcorn and paper plates. If you want to learn how to avoid them, visit EWG’s Guide to PFCs for a list of products that contain PFCs.

I know, I know, you love your non-stick pan but before you swear off cooking forever consider these alternatives.

  • Stainless steel is a popular one because of its ability to brown food better than non-stick surfaces since you can cook at a much higher temperatures (most can go in your oven as well!)
  • Cast iron is another great alternative to non-stick pans and is extremely durable, sometimes lasting through generations of cooks! Like stainless steel, these pans can be heated to much higher temperatures than non-stick and can safely be placed in the oven.
  • For baking, use glass or ceramic pans. Not only are they safer to use but they also conserve energy. Since they warm up quicker and retain heat longer than their metal counterparts, oven temperatures can be lowered by 25 degrees without changing bake time….bonus!

Skip the plastics
Small amounts of toxic chemicals like BPA and phthalates can leach into food and liquids when stored in plastic containers. This is especially true when reheating food in a microwave. Even if the plastic container is considered BPA Free or Microwave Safe  your best bet is to completely avoid these chemicals completely by storing and re-heating your food using ceramic or glass food containers (e.g.Pyrex).

Keep your cool
Every time you open your freezer, the cold air escapes and warm air is introduced. Most of the energy your freezer uses goes towards cooling this warm air down. If you keep your freezer well stocked, less warm air can enter and whatever does enter will be partially cooled down by the freezer’s contents. If you can’t fill your freezer up with food, consider filling the void with newspaper, bags of shipping peanuts, bags, containers or milk jugs filled with water or even bags of ice. When filling your freezer make sure it is defrosted and dry. Place the non-food, void fillers in the middle and keep your food items in the front/sides where they can be grabbed quickly, keeping about an inch or two of space from the top and walls. This will help the thermostat work properly.

Fill your fridge using the tips above and add few more steps to ensure maximum efficiency.

  • Keep food covered. Your fridge’s compressor works harder if there is moisture inside of it. Covered food reduces your refrigerator’s carbon footprint.
  • Clean your compressor coils annually. (see your manual for cleaning recommendations.
  • Keep the correct temperature. 35 F to 40 F is considered optimum run temperature for a fridge (see your manual for manufacturer’s recommendations0
  • Check the seals To test, close the door on a strip of paper and  see how easy it is to pull out. If  it slides out easily, your refrigerator door is probably leaking cold air.
  • Move your fridge Keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from your stove ensures it doesn’t have to work as hard.

Avoid dishpan hands
Washing a load of dishes in a dishwasher uses about 37% less water than washing dishes by hand. A new, Energy Star qualified dishwasher will save, on average, 1,300 gallons of water over its lifetime. To save even more energy and resources:

  • Replace your dishwasher if its more than 10 years old
  • Skip the heat-drying option
  • Run the washer only when it’s full
  • Don’t prerinse in the sink.

Bring your own baggage
Each year the United States consumes 30 billion plastic and 10 billion paper grocery bags only to end up in our landfills. Next time you go to the store, BYOB and keep all that plastic out of our landfills. Some stores will even give consumers incentives like  a few cents off  when you bring your own re-usuable totes. If you are like me and need some help remembering to actually BRING them to the store, check out 10 ways to remember your bags

These are just a few of the many changes you can make to go green in 2013. Little changes equal BIG impact. Have a happy, healthy GREEN New Year!!

Armageddon Green, are YOU?

Thursday, December 20th, 2012
Friday, December 21, 2012 marks the end of the Mayan long-count calendar. On this day, some believe the world will end when a planet called Nibiru, discovered by the Sumerians, will collide with the Earth. Chances are, just like previous end-of-the-world predictions, December 21 will come and go without incident so why not green your routine for a more sustainable future?

Send VOCs packing
Conventional house paint emits harmful volatile organic compounds (aka VOCs). Consider giving your walls a green makeover with “low” or “no VOC” paint to cut down on your family’s exposure to these toxic fumes. Carpeting, pads and glues can release harmful VOCs as well so when you shop for your new floor covering, consider ec0-friendly options.

See the light with greener lightbulbs
Incandescent bulbs are a huge waste of energy since less than 10 percent of the bulb’s energy is used to produce light (the rest escapes as heat). When shopping for  a greener light bulb, you will be looking at  brightness (lumens), colorlifeenergy use (watts), and estimated operating costs for the year. Check out this Green light bulb guide put out by Consumer Reports to see what type of bulb is right for you and your home

Make those old appliances green with envy
Upgrading old appliances to new, Energy Star-rated ones can save you about a third on your energy bills along with the added benefit of reduced greenhouse gas emissions. To entice consumers to steer towards these energy saving appliances, rebate-with-purchase are offered from time to time. Check out this Energy Star Rebate Finder to see what is currently available before you hit the stores. Want to save even more? Try unplugging while not in use. No matter how energy efficient your electronics and appliances are, if they are plugged in, they are using energy. Stop this energy suck known as “phantom energy“  in its path and keep about 10% of your energy costs in your pocket. That’s like getting a FREE month of energy a year!

Be a heat miser
Did you know that a properly pre-programmed thermostats can save you about $180 every year in energy costs and that your air filter needs to be changed every 3 months? How about the fact that by sealing and insulating ducts you can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent — and sometimes much more? These little changes can make a huge difference in the environment and your bank account.

Love Low E
Low emissivity aka Low E windows offer significant improvements over the traditional window. These windows are energy efficient and block most UV light which protects the fabrics, carpets and finishes of your home from the effects of sunlight. These windows are also often eligible for tax credits.Just say no to water bottles
You know you should be drinking filtered water so you have a few bottles a month delivered. This might be good for you but not so good for your bank account and mother earth. Consider installing a whole house water filter and never worry about storing giant plastic water bottles, using excess fossil fuels having it delivered and no more water delivery bills! If you can’t install a whole house filter you can still reap the same benefits and save money filtering tap water using one of the many pitcher filters available in any big box store or supermarket. Either way, a small investment now, saves a tremendous amount of money and resources vs buying bottled or delivered water.Be a Greener Cleaner

Green your cleaning solutions by making them at home. Homemade cleaning solutions are:

  • Cost effective
  • Have multiple uses
  • Healthier to use
  • Environmentally friendly

Small changes over time can make a huge impact so don’t fret if you can’t accomplish these all at once. Most of these tips are so simple and easy, we know you won’t Mayan them one bit.

Holiday Stress Can Leave Your Back A Mess

by Kathleen DeDio 465 suite 1 Route 25A
Miller Place NY 11764

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…as the song goes, but you could be singing the blues if you’re suffering with aches and pains as a result of holiday stress. Stress, in its negative sense maybe simply defined as an imbalance of bodily systems due to excessive stimulation.

Let’s see, what could be causing excessive stimulation at this time of year?  Keep in mind that the most common complaints that people bring to their doctors are headache, backache and fatigue. These and other illnesses may have a physical, chemical or mental/emotional origin. Physical illness can be caused by accidents ie: falling while putting up decorations, strains from improper body movement ie: carrying packages and postural stress ie: sitting and wrapping gifts for an extended period of time. Chemical causes of illness include nutritional and/or dietary disorders ie: holiday food fare to include lots of sugar and high fat content and reactions to environmental stressors ie: too many spiked eggnogs. Mental and emotional illnesses are most commonly stress related ie: worry and anxiety about family, job responsibilities, financial concerns and fallout from Hurricane Sandy.

It is important to remember that regardless of the origin of a disorder, its effects on the human body will manifest in the nervous system. The nervous system is the organizer and coordinator of all bodily processes. All other systems depend upon the integrity of the nervous system to function properly. This includes the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, reproductive, endocrine (hormonal) and musculoskeletal systems. Therefore the most direct method of presenting and correcting illness is directed towards balancing the nervous system. This is precisely the pathway that chiropractic care utilizes.

Let me explain…Chiropractors work primarily with the spinal column because it houses and protects the spinal cord, the “switchboard” of the nervous system, through which the nerves pass as they carry the nerve signals to all the parts of the body. Chiropractors specialize in treating vertebral subluxation. In simplest terms, a subluxation is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.

So since your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body, if there is interference with the signals due to subluxations, certain parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their innate abilities. In other words, some part of your body will not be working properly. This stress to the nervous system will manifest with such symptoms as headache, backache, fatigue, cardiovascular (high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis), digestive disorders (ulcers, colitis) and sleeping difficulties. Medical research has suggested that up to 80% of all illness is stress related!

It is the specialty of the Doctor of Chiropractic to locate subluxations and reduce or correct them. This is done through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically designed to correct the vertebral subluxation in your spine. Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of study and training to be experts at correcting subluxations.

When a Chiropractor corrects the vertebral subluxation they restore the nerve function flow to allow the body to heal itself.

So if you are experiencing an imbalance of any of your bodily systems due to overstimulation ie: holiday stress, why not come see me for an evaluation to see if you have subluxation or stress to your nervous system?  No need to leave your back a mess or your house a mess for that matter. An adjustment will help reduce your stress. Having a professional come clean your house will reduce your stress as well. Call Teresa’s Family Cleaning today. Happy Holidays everyone!!
